배고파? Hungry?

Meal time is one of my favorite times to integrate Korean because it’s the easiest! Ordering food, saying “I’m hungry” or “full,” and learning the names of dishes was probably the first things I picked up on my Korean journey.

I’ve read that consistency and compartmentalizing language can help maintain bilingualism. So, I have been trying to strictly keep to Korean for certain routines and rituals, meal time being one of them. I’ve done it so many times now that even my husband will echo, “먹자, 밥 먹어! ( meokja, bap meogeo “Let’s eat!”)

There is a lot you can say and share with your children at the dinner table. Even if you aren’t confident in your Korean conversation skills or the other caregivers don’t speak Korean, you can incorporate food-related phrases. My 19-month old even manages to mutter “맛있어” (masisseo “yummy!”) For anyone still learning Korean, like me, I put together an easy flashcard for caregivers to reference.

I also made ten black and white flashcards perfect for coloring to really absorb the Korean vocabulary related to meal time. Download two of them above. Subscribe and get all ten plus my meal time coloring page (photo below) in an easy to print PDF.

If you’re into the Montessori thing (we are!) I also made a simple placemat for you to download, print, and color. I don’t have a laminator machine or any peel and stick sheets, but if you do this should be just as good as a plastic placemat. My flashcards are 5″ x 7″ and can also be stretched to print on letter-sized paper. I hope you like these freebies! Please share and tag @tigerboomcreative. Thanks so much for reading and joining me on this journey.
