Easy and Fun 복주머니 Bokjumeoni (Lucky Purse) 설날 Seollal (Lunar New Year) Craft

Last year around 설날, I was entering my third trimester and struggling to keep up energy. So, we didn’t do much for the holiday. This year, I feel like I am starting to catch my breath and I really wanted to do more! My son’s class asked if I was interested in sharing a bit about the Korean side of Lunar New Year. So, I wanted to make an easy and quick craft the class could do together. After a bit of research, I found a cute DIY 복주머니 (bokjumeoni) activity, simplified and modified it for our family. Of course, I wanted to share it with you!

My husband’s family is from Hong Kong. So, I am very familiar with the tradition of children receiving “lucky red envelopes” after wishing parents a Happy New Year. In the Korean tradition, children often have their own lucky bag (복주머니 bokjumeoni) and keep the money they receive inside. There are typically two types of bags and are sometimes worn with 한복 (hanbok.)

Making Your Bokjumeoni

This activity is fairly simple and won’t take much time.

Download and print both pages of the activity. Bokjumeoni Craft P1 / Bokjumeoni Craft P2

Materials

  • Printer
  • Scissors
  • Crayons
  • Glue Stick (or regular glue)

How To

  1. Print both pages.
  2. Color and decorate both parts of your bokjumeoni.
  3. Cut out both pieces on the bold line.
  4. Fold along all the dotted lines.
  5. Place the pull tab (that says 새해 복 많이 받으세요) inside the lucky bag piece.
  6. Carefully put glue along the folded tabs.
  7. Fold the front of the bokjumeoni over and on top of the tabs.

Wait for the glue to dry and you can pull your purse top up and down to reveal and hide the message!

We had a lot of fun decorating and creating this and my son can’t wait to share this with his class. We will mail this one to our friends in Korea for the holiday. How will you share your bokjumeoni?
